For those who remember socialism, the name Olga Hepnarová needs no introduction. She was the last woman in Czechoslovakia to be sentenced to death, and for a crime so shocking that it got the whole country talking. Talking, but in hushed tones, since a mentally disturbed young woman was far from the socialist ideal. With black-and-white images and stark glimpses of pivotal events in Olga’s life, this young directorial duo attempts to sketch the story of a lonely young woman, willingly isolated from the outside world, while they avoid anything in the way of explanation or conjecture. What about Olga’s motivation, ostensible mental illness, abuse, emotional deprivation and other things that could have led her to her death cell? Viewers will have to answer (or relinquish) these still-unanswered questions for themselves.
