A no-nonsense father decides to send his 11-year-old son Billy to a boxing class at the local gym to learn to “be a man”. Billy tries to oblige him, but when he sees the twirling tutus of the little ballerinas-to-be in the same room, he is enchanted by the grace of their movements – while imagining what his father and militant brother would say. But his aspirations win out, and he arranges to join the girls in Mrs Wilkinson’s ballet class. Before long, Billy has discovered a new world and displayed enormous talent. And soon after that, under pressure from Mrs Wilkinson, Billy’s father sends him to a prestigious ballet school – a decision he won’t regret… The story of a boy who chases his dream, in a convincingly detailed 1980s Thatcher-era England. Jamie Bell shines as a film star – and a brilliant dancer. Billy Elliot won the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film, the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor (Jamie Bell) and Best Supporting Actress (Julie Walters), as well as four British Independent Film Awards and three Oscar nominations.
