Set in Tsai’s native Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur to be exact (and banned in the country upon its release), I Don't Want to Sleep Alone is a film about bizarre intimate interactions, the need for them and their absence, about living and barely surviving. Once again, essentially bleak themes of loneliness and longing for human touch are brought to life by a nearly wordless story told in Tsai's spellbinding style. A cinematic rumba, upending in a strange, disconcerting love triangle, in a city whose heat and humidity make it difficult to breathe.
