“Loev” is a faintly childish word for “love” you use when you want to express your feelings, but on second thought not really.

Far from the usual Bollywood or Tollywood fare, Indian director Sudhanshu Saria’s feature debut is a road movie sharing more in common with American indie cinema. Jay, in Mumbai on business, and Sahil, taking a breather from his differences with his boyfriend, head out on a carefree jaunt to clear their heads. No dramatic coming-outs or death by stoning here. But given that homosexuality isn’t even acknowledged as existing in India, the mere mention of it a criminal offense, Loev had to be filmed in complete secrecy. For in Saria’s film, non-hetero is the norm.
