Though Elle is a new film, it can already be considered a classic. When Paul Verhoeven’s latest had its world premiere at Cannes 2016, it immediately inspired both praise and controversy, not just for its delicately brutal content, but also thanks to its indisputable quality. Every ardent film fan has heard of it…but hearing and seeing are two very different things, and the film has yet to see its official distribution premiere in Slovakia or the Czech Republic. Since its release, Elle has racked up nearly 60 awards from around the world, including a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Isabelle Huppert, without whom, as the Dutch director has repeatedly confirmed, the film would not have been possible. When the unapproachable head of a video game developer is brutally raped by an unknown intruder, instead of reporting it, she starts playing a “game” of her own…
