Paris, the early 1990s. For ten years now, the death toll of AIDS has risen steadily. But now activists from the Parisian chapter of ACT UP are fighting against public indifference, apathetic governments and the machinations of pharmaceutical firms. Newcomer Nathan is introduced to the radical movement by Sean, whose political struggle is also a battle for his own life. Sean is HIV positive, and his time is running out...

For BPM, French director – and longtime screenwriter for his better-known colleague Laurent Cantet – Robin Campillo chose a story that demanded to be told from a queer perspective, organically linking the personal with the political. The result is a mix of restrained drama with a sense for detail, capturing the private dimension of ideological struggle, and an urgent, acutely emotional romance. With a title that refers both to a racing heart rate and the pulsing beat of 90s house, BPM offers an unconventional view of a community that decided to "live politics in the first person".

Cannes 2017 – Grand Prize of the Jury, FIPRESCI Prize, Queer Palm, Palme d'Or nomination
