At the turn of the 21st century, a young man began writing books about his problematic coming of age, attracting worldwide attention. His name was JT LeRoy. And in January 2006, The New York Times reported that he didn’t exist. J. T. LeRoy is the authentic story of the literary hoax of a generation. But it is also an intimate portrait of two women who, for six years, led a bizarre double life: nearly 40-year-old author/musician Laura Albert, and her sister-in-law, college student Savannah Knoop. Together they invented the JT’s persona and presented him in public, where he gained recognition among celebrities, artists, fans and the media. This film adaptation of the book Girl Boy Girl: How I Became JT LeRoy is above all an acting tour de force from Laura Dern, as the impulsive, irresistibly manic Laura, and Kristen Stewart, as a frustrated young woman and an androgynous, standoffish pseudo-literary celebrity.
