With an outstanding career under her belt, investigator Laurel Hester is in for a promotion. 2002, the fact that she loves a woman is something she won’t dare speak of openly.
But when misfortune strikes in the form of terminal cancer, Hester has to summon up her last bits of strength to come entirely out of the closet – to win the woman she loves a right that comes automatically to heterosexual couples.
Freeheld is a true story, a decidedly engagé LGBTI film. Nevertheless, director Peter Sollett navigates the genre's typical pitfalls (sentimentality and moralizing) and the incredible difficult subject (terminal illness) with bravura.
